Worlds Rewind

Let’s rewind the tapes and review the footage from the 2017 FlowRider® World Flowboarding Championships!

The event was a huge success, taking a giant leap towards the bigger picture and overall goals of growing the sport of flowboarding.  We are already wishing we could fast forward to next year’s event.  Believe it or not, we are already planning it and know that it is going to be bigger and better.

For those of you that didn’t attend the Worlds event, shame on you, you missed out!  To quote the legendary country singer, Kenny Chesney, “We had our toes in the sand, a drink in our hand and not a worry in the world.”

Before we continue recapping the event and breaking down the awesome time flowboarders, their family members and spectators alike all had, we want to give a massive shout and gentle pat on the back to those traveling competitors, supporting sponsors and of course the ever so welcoming hosting staff at Aquaworld Cancun.  Everybody from the security staff, to the vendors to the spectacular live band put their best foot forward.  Without each and every one of you, the end result would not have been the same!

Tacos, cerveza, tequila and futball (soccer) is what you generally reference when talking about Mexico. However, the sport of flowboarding is quickly making a name for itself south of the border. While it’s not quite as respected as regional favorite, soccer, the local flowboarders are becoming very passionate and are eager to Go With the Flow™.

The 2017 FlowRider® World Flowboarding Championships took place at Aquaworld® in Cancún, Mexico, November 3-5th featuring the best flowboarders in the world!

Around the world, there are 200+ plus FlowRider venue installations, but within the next few months, there will be 8 in Mexico alone.  After a very successful World Flowboarding Championship event hosted by Aquaworld Cancun, the heat has been turned up.

El Campeonato Mundial de Flowrider fue todo un éxito, muchas felicidades a todos los competidores y muchas gracias a nuestros patrocinadores y asistentes, ¡Hasta el siguiente Campeonato!

Although, we all agreed, ‘What happens at Aquaworld, stay at Aquaworld!’ the event and overall experience was too good not to share.

“We Create Fun here at AquaWorld, that is our slogan and we build our brand around that, including the FlowRider was a no brainer for us.” mentioned Carlos Fuentes

Aquaworld rolled out the red carpet for the World Flowboarding Championships weekend, welcoming competitors with a wide open wave (a FlowRider® Double, that is) and an extensive list of Aquatasic activities for competitors to experience the best Cancun has to offer (at a discounted rate too) .

For Martin Carbonell (MEXICO FLOW REPRESENATIVE AND COMPETITOR) it  huge step twoards his personal goals and the bigger picture of growing the sport, ” I felt like I motivated a lot of new riders and local riders to keep trying and improving their skills on and off the wave!” Martin passionately explain when asked about his involvement with bringing the event to his region for the first time ever.

One of those local riders Martin was referring to, Alex Ordica. Alex put in the training efforts and also made an appearance on the US FLOW Tour earlier in the year. Ordica capitalized on his experience, earned his way into the Semi-Finals on the big stage, where he was matched up with the back to back and defending World Champion, Jake Chipman (Utah, USA). Ordica also qualified to represent Team Mexico and represent his countries flat at the Worlds level for the first time ever.

“Competing against riders from all around the world was definitely a challenge, but advancing to the semi final’s and having the opportunity to represent México in the WFC for the first time was a dream come true!” explained Ordica. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds for flowboarding in México” Alex went  on to add.

[Translated to Spanish: Competir contra riders de todo el mundo fue definitivamente un reto, pero avanzar a la semifinal y tener la oportunidad de representar a México por primera vez en el Campeonato Mundial de Flowboarding fue un sueño cumplido!

Splash & Play the Pawnee Plunge Way!

Pawnee Plunge Waterpark, Nebraska

Summer is here, flowboarders! If you are looking for a “cool” way to beat the heat in Columbus, go splash and play the Pawnee Plunge way!

Catch a wave and go with the flow in Columbus, Nebraska! That’s right, you can ride waves in Nebraska and experience the thrill of surfing at Columbus Aquatics Pawnee Plunge Waterpark. It’s time to throw on your bathing suits and hit the waves, the FlowRider is waiting!

Recently, Columbus Aquatics flew in well-known flowboarder, FLOW Tour Coordinator and FlowRider’s Wave Training Specialist, Adam Muller.

“We are aiming to create a community around the FlowRider wave,” explains Director of Columbus Aquatics, Doug Kluth.  “We want to do things right and make this an annual event that everyone gets excited for,” Kluth adds.

The idea behind the flow clinics is to engage the locals and get them excited about the inaugural FlowRider FLOW Tour contest at Pawnee Plunge on Columbus Day, August 19th!

FLOW Tour is the premiere competitive tour featuring some of the world’s best riders but also features divisions for all ages and skill levels – youth to masters, novice to pro.

“The FLOW Tour encourages all participants to enter the competition. The events offer divisions for all ages and skill levels!” explains FLOW Tour Coordinator, Adam Muller.

You can preregister for the competition here! Entry fees will be collected by at the waterpark prior to scheduled competitor practice sessions on the event weekend.

Over this special weekend, Muller worked with Pawnee Plunge staff members so they can hone in on their training techniques. He showed off with some advanced riding and gave some pro tips to increase skill levels on the wave for both bodyboarding and stand-up riding.

“I live on a lake, so I wakeboard all the time.  It totally helped me pick up flowboarding a faster,” states one of the female lifeguards.  “Once I learned the basics and got some pro tips, I was super excited to try again!”

“The more comfortable the staff is on and around the wave, riding or training, the better the guest experience will be!” explains Muller. “First-time riders will be in good hands! These lifeguards are trained and ready to provide a safe and exciting experience,” he added.

“We have several staff members extremely pumped to take the FlowRider attraction to the next level here at Pawnee,” mentions Aquatics Manager, Brook Tomka. “He hasn’t left the FlowRider – every chance he has, he is working it or riding it!” Brook added when asked about one of her lead lifeguards.

Muller also hung around to help the local riders and out-of-town guests overcome the intimidation factor. He helped them exceed their current skill level on the FlowRider with basic tricks and stunts.  A lot of them will soon be able to show off to their peers at the competition in August!

“I’ve never even been to the beach before…” says one local kid who participated in the flow clinics, “it was awesome to ride a wave!”

You won’t want to miss the competition on August 19th! You may be the FIRST flowboarding Champion in Nebraska if you sign up and start mastering some tricks. Find out more details and preregister for the competition here: http://www.flowboarders.com/competitions/pawnee-plundge-proam/

*Entry fees will be collected by at the waterpark prior to scheduled competitor practice sessions on the event weekend.

Sunset Session at WHSD

With so many not-so-cool rumors and a lot of drama swarming around the FlowBarrel® for the past few months, we are happy to bring you a brand new photo gallery from Wave House. As the sunsets on west coast, which appeared to be just the other day, the Wave House San Diego Team riders had the special pleasure of riding their home FlowBarrel for the first time in a long time.

“I couldn’t stop smiling, it’s my happy place,” explains Eric Silverman, defending Men’s FlowBarrel World Champion. “Especially, since I thought I might never have the opportunity to ride this wave again.”

Say what!? If you are active on social media, you may have reacted with a sad face or commented with a serious pang of heartbreak.  We. Do. Not. Blame. You.  This is all rightfully so.  If you are not active on social media, then you will now understand how the news of Wave House® Durban’s FlowBarrel Double closing down and Wave House Mallorca’s left FlowBarrel 10 closing down in the last few months is tearing at flowboarders’ hearts all across the globe.

Both aforementioned venues have hosted World Flowboarding Championships – Durban in 2011 and Mallorca in 2012, and help generate the constantly-rising participant and athlete base of the sport we are all so passionate about.  The memories that flowboarders far and wide have created at these venues will forever live on, especially with some of the veteran riders of the sport like Amy Stevens.

“It’s is great seeing familiar faces and bringing everyone together to ride,” says Stevens, former National and World Flowboarding Champion.  Amy is a long time rider that feels the heartbreak like we do.  She is right, it’s awesome to have the crew come together in distant corners of the world, to catch up, to ride.  This tight knit community is what fuels flowboarders and the growth of flowboarding.

While we mourn the loss of these famous flowboarding landmarks and well known competitive arenas, the last thing we want to do is say good-bye to another.  However you may have heard the rumors about yet another FlowBarrel meeting its demise – Bruticus Maximus at Wave House San Diego.

“The session was awesome!” says Dereke Zeeman.  “Nothing but smiles from getting pitted under the lip to boosting above the lip,” he added.

We know – this is a hard piece of information to swallow.   Wave House San Diego has been the mecca for flowboarding since the beginning and most has recently contributed so much to the growth of the sport with its annual FLOW Tour competition and US Open of Flowboarding events.  We are choosing to remain positive and are simply enjoying every session we can get.

Unfortunately, neither the FlowRider nor FlowBarrel will be operating for public sessions this summer.  However if you are in the area over a summer weekend, there will most likely be a Wave Shows and/or some high-flying action from the WHSD Team.

Check out these pictures, bask in the orange sunset session light and remember the good times with us.  Stay tuned to learn what will come next for these venues and all the other FlowRider® venues around the world.
